The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust (SATH) have just provided me with an update on the ongoing works at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) site.
Enabling works for the Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP) have commenced at RSH following approval of the Outline Business Case (OBC) in December 2023. Currently works are underway in Ward 30 (this is adjacent to the Emergency Department). SATH has also been developing the Full Business Case (FBC) which is the final stage of government approval.
Other works are underway at the RSH site to improve care for all communities. These include a unit to house a new gamma camera, plans for a modular ward extension, and a state-of-the-art LINAC bunker. To support the construction of these projects, throughout April and May, there will be multiple large deliveries of construction material for these projects at RSH. Alongside this, we will begin to see construction work around the main road, which is the main entrance to the site leading up to the Copthorne building.
In the coming weeks, the main road onto the site will be widened and realigned to maintain ambulance and construction access. Due to the volume of work taking place, these works are necessary to allow for construction traffic to enter, drop off materials, and exit the site safely and with as little disruption as possible to other hospital traffic. This means there will be some disruption to this area until the work is complete.
Subject to Full Business Case (FBC) government approval, work can begin in the main building works as soon as possible. At this point, colleagues, patients, and visitors will begin to see significant changes at RSH.
SATH is aware of the impact of on-going work on car parking for patients, visitors and colleagues and they inform me that they are committed to improving car parking for everyone. Patient parking continues to be a priority and they have launched a park and ride service for staff.
SATH will be holding a public open day on Thursday 23 May, 4pm – 6pm at the Shropshire Education Conference Centre which is situated to the rear of the hospital site, to ensure communities feel informed of the proposed plans.
