Daniel responds to residents' concerns about proposed incinerator

Daniel is pleased to announce that he has enlisted the help of Mr Barry Haynes to research the issue of the proposed incinerator in Harlescott. Mr Haynes is a constituent with wide ranging experience on environmental issues and will be a real asset to the team.

Last year Shropshire Waste partnership (SWP) awarded a 27 year contract to Veolia Environmental Services to deliver household waste management services in Shropshire. Under this contract Veolia have proposed to incinerate household waste in a new purpose-built facility to be constructed at Battlefield in Shrewsbury.

It is proposed that this facility will generate electrical power, but to date no district heating has been included in the plans. It is understood that a planning application is to be submitted later this year which Shrewsbury Country Council will then rule upon. Similar proposals for incinerators have caused major public concern elsewhere in the country, largely on public health grounds, and Shrewsbury is no exception.

Daniel commented that he had "personally received a large number of letters, calls, and e-mails from concerned residents on this topic"ťand "felt the need to be better informed on both this, and the wider issue of managing waste in Shrewsbury".

Commenting on Barry joining the team, Daniel said that he was "delighted to have the input of somebody with such a distinguished career in environmental management".

Mr Haynes will be working exclusively on this project for one day per week, and will be meeting with all interested parties. In so doing he will be able to give Daniel a clear idea of not just the views of Constituents, but also of the Government directives and the legislation which govern waste management.
