Number of house repossessions is 'shocking'

Daniel recently voiced his shock at the number of people who have had their homes repossessed in recent weeks.

At a national level, the Ministry of Justice have said that 28,658 orders were made by the courts in England and Wales in the second quarter of 2008. This was up 24% on the same period in 2007 and 4% higher than the first quarter of 2008. It has been estimated that 103 houses are being repossessed each day in England and Wales.

The Financial Services Authority, has warned lenders to treat their customers 'fairly' if they are running into financial difficulty. Yet despite this, and despite Ministers saying they want banks to seize back homes only as a 'last resort', banks are still very regularly pushing people onto the street.

It seems that once again, Gordon Brown has broken his promise. Daniel points out that in his 1997 Budget speech, Gordon Brown said, "I will not allow house prices to get out of control and put at risk the sustainability of the future".

Brown went on to say that he would not allow the return to 'instability, speculation and negative equity'ťof the 1980s and 1990s. And yet under Brown this return has occurred and people are being thrown out of their homes.

Daniel has announced that he is prepared to meet with any of his Constituents who are being treated unfairly by unscrupulous banks in these difficult economic times. He said, "I am more than willing to help my Constituents as much as I can, and I am prepared to name and shame those banks who are not treating their customers fairly".
